Why no form of education is a waste

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
― Dr. Seuss

Ever since I can remember, my parents always drilled it into me that I needed to educate myself. I was brought up to seek answers for all the questions I may have, and because of this I have developed a love for learning and improving my understanding on the world around me. My Mother is a teacher (by nature and profession) who has this hunger to acquire knowledge like no one I have ever known; and it definitely rubbed off onto me.

After I graduated and started working, I became increasingly frustrated because I wanted more. I know I want to further my studies and it is something I would love to pursue for as long as I can – even if it is outside of the field I am currently working in. I realise this may sound ridiculous to some people because in their minds if I study something else then everything I worked for over the past few years would go to waste. This thinking bothers me…

Maybe it was the way I was raised but I believe that any knowledge you gain can never be a waste. We live in a world so vast and extraordinary that our minds cannot begin to comprehend the complexity of it all! And I believe that anything you learn builds a better understanding of the world.

If I ever decide to further my studies in a different field, all the knowledge I have gained up until then would not be in vain. I have improved my perception in a certain part of the world which ultimately means that I have a better view of things than what I had before I studied. Even more so, I have gained skills that would help me in the long run.

In this world we try to put a price on everything. And since we have to pay for furthering our education, we immediately put a price tag on our qualifications. Instead of looking at it as improving ourselves, and answering questions about the world we may have; we think of the experience as a commodity. And if we don’t use our qualifications then it automatically means that we wasted our time and money on something we “wont be using”.

However, I regard by knowledge and education as a key which I use to better myself. It is my tool which I can use to give back to the world in some way or another. And above all else it makes me appreciate the world I live in and the life I am living…

As my late grandfather Sheikh Shakier Gamieldien said:

“Your knowledge should make you humble; because the more you know, the more you realise you don’t know.”

Same here Misia!! People look at their qualifications these days as a means to an end which I totally disagree with. It has become a symbol of status which it should not even be associated with! I enjoy learning and studying, and even if I don’t use the qualification in my line of work, I still believe it is of value to me as a person because of the way it has shaped me and broaden my mind to understanding the world just a fraction better than what I did before. Thank you so much for reading, I really enjoy coming across like-minded people 🙂

Nihaad this is so beautiful the fact that your parents instilled the hunger for knowledge in you. My parents did too but I just faltered because look at me I am reading posts and writing comments instead of finishing up my assignment haha. Jokes aside, I am jelly looking at your instagram posts that you have such a beautiful bookshelf with awesome books and time to devour it all.

You can never have too much education!! Everything we learn helps us to move through life forming opinions and making decisions. I always think, the more varied our education, the more varied our thinking – the better off we are!

Thank you for visiting and commenting Jonelle!! When I told someone that I want to study something more “broad” because I would like to have more options, he told me that I would be a “jack of all trades, master of few.”! I was so shocked to think that someone could be so narrow minded. It’s great knowing that people are moving away from that kind of thinking out there in the world!

So happy to hear you feel the same way. When we hear all that scientists discover these days, it strengthens my Iemaan knowing that this beautiful world is so vast beyond out imagination. It makes me realise how very small I am, and how much I appreciate being given this miracle of life. Thank you for reading 🙂

I completely agree. I studied English, Film and Visual Art History and so often I am asked why I studied feilds that cannot guarantee a stable job. I too come from a family of teacher and my answer to those who question my thirst for knowledge is always the same. Why would I limited my education? I now work in social media and intend to study further next year. So what if my studies have nothing to do with my current job? I enjoy it. Lovely post!

Uugh those people annoy me! It goes to show how narrow minded they are! I am craving for me and I know that in order for me to find my passion, I need to get out there and learn as much as I can – which I love! So great finding people who are happily pursuing careers outside of the field that they have studied for. It truly inspires me 🙂 Thank you for visiting, I hope to see more of you here Xo

EXACTLY!! Finally someone who understands me on this! I mean This is exactly the way I see knowledge. I would like to learn EVERYTHING (if only I could!). You know, I studied many different domains in differents universities but I never graduated in any of them so I don’t have a degree and I don’t want one because I only want learn, not to built a career. Really loved this post! I also hate those persons who think that degrees and career make who you are. And you’re lucky that your parents understand you on that, mine find it useless to read & learn different thing if it’s not to work in the domain.

Aaah well that is too bad about your folks! But we must understand where they come from too. In their days they had to study and get a job, I don’t think it was for the passion but more about doing it because it was a means to an end. They find it difficult to understand that times have changed and things are so different now than what it used to be. But it is amazing that you want to learn purely for the sake of increasing your knowledge and broadening your mind. The more you learn about the world around you the more you appreciate the wonder of creation which in turn brings you closer to your Creator! As long as you can bring good to the world, it should be encouraged not suppressed! Thank you for reading and commenting!

Very interesting what you said about our parents generation. I didn’t really thought about this. I think you’re right.
And yes we are very lucky to be able to learn so many things and to discover the world, I love that. I’m on WordPress to discover other cultures! For now I only knew Soraya Mckenzie from South Africa (poor girl, I asked her so many questions) so now I also have your blog to discover South African culture 😉 be prepared to my annoying questions, I’m very curious! Hahaa
        May Allah protect you.

It is so wonderful that you want to learn about different cultures! It is a beautiful thing, really. Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, I will try my best to answer where I can! South Africa is a world in one country with a rich cultural background. I have written some posts on my home town but this one remains my favourite:

This was such a wonderful post, Nihaad. I agree completely. Having to work for my own education from a young age, education definitely plays a huge role in my life. As I grew older, however, I’ve realized that the value of education is mere material, and it is what I gain and what I learn that will stick with me throughout. I’m loving the quote by your late grandpa. What a wise man he must have been!

Hi May!! So good having you back! I appreciate this comment so much because it just shows me that there are so many people out there who share my thoughts on this matter. It must have been incredibly hard to work for your own education but I imagine you appreciate it even more! I agree with you that education these days have other sigmas attached to it, but as long as you are growing yourself and you are bettering the person that you are, then none of that really matters! So keep up the fantastic example that you are setting for generations to come 🙂 Indeed, he was a very wise man, I am so proud to be his grandchild! Thank you again for your wonderful comment!
